  7. This little utility will send I/O to and from your file server at an 
  8. alarming rate.
  9.  
  10. To run it type Net-Work filename.dat where filename.dat is any 
  11. output file name. When using it in a multi user environment please 
  12. make sure that the file name given is different for each test station.
  13.  
  14. Syntax for running  Net?? filen 
  15.  
  16. NOTE : Output filename must NOT be longer than 6 letters also it may 
  17.        NOT have an extension

  20. Below is the Beta release history file, for those users  who dont 
  21. know how many hours of development goes into even the smallest of 
  22. programs.

  47. Q) Will Net?? work on a non Network Machine ?
  48. A) Yes however it wont prove anything except work your hard drive 
  49. quite hard.

  51. Q) Will Net?? damage or delete data on my hard drive ?
  52. A) Net?? writes data just the way you would if you were copying 
  53. files therefore no it wont.

  55. Q) Once I have run Net?? I find a whole lot (15) of strange files on 
  56. my hard disk, what are these things ?
  57. A) These files are the output files created by Net?? feel free to 
  58. delete them.

  60. Q) I keep getting "NOT ENOUGH FILE HANDLES" ?
  61. A) Put your FILES statement in your config.sys up to at least 15

  69. Ok some great new features and a bug fix Net49 now includes speed 
  70. specifications and a SHELL to dos, the shell may take a couple of 
  71. seconds to execute but still it works. The  400 run time barrier 
  72. FIXED, I will however be running it overnight tonight to see if the 
  73. 16282 barrier has been fixed along with the 400 (Times run) barrier.
  74. Output file size has now been changed, (smaller now = 168 bytes) I 
  75. will enlarge it later, to 4k which I believe is a typical packet 
  76. size for many networks.

  82. After some wide area Official release testing we have decided to go 
  83. back to beta versions until all problems are sorted out.
  84. Program still falling over after about 400 runs this will be sorted 
  85. out in the next release. I have changed the output file from becoming 
  86. to messy, to be piped into a directory (Same name as your output 
  87. file) now once the code stops running you are left with one EMPTY 
  88. subdirectory which you can then delete. I have decided for the 
  89. meantime to leave that directory there in case any one wants to 
  90. UNERASE the files and see what kind of output is being sent to them.

  114. With Version 4.6ß Net?? opens and closed a total of 9 files instead 
  115. of one, as the code progresses I will force it to open more.
  116. This will put up your Network utilization LIKE CRAZY

  125. those who want to let this file run overnight, still have to sort 
  126. out the 16282 barrier.

  136. Renamed *.exe code to be Net??.Exe where ?? is the current version 
  137. number. Put in a moving icon and colour this will give a visual 
  138. representation of the workstation speed. Also added in ELAPSED TIME 
  139. FOR LAST TEST, now FULLY multi user. 
  140. Tested under Adv 2.15 Novell Netware from 15 workstations without a 
  141. problem. A good tip here when running the code from every work 
  142. station EG : Net43 Ian  Give the name of the machine as an output 
  143. file, from the server it will be interesting to see how fast each 
  144. machine accesses the lan. Problem still to be sorted out is that 
  145. after 16282 loops the program bombs out. Although the file server 
  146. performance only goes up to +/- 40-80 % your disk write pending 
  147. shoots up to about 30-40 sometimes higher. (This was on an IBM Model 
  148. 80 machine.

  152. Increased I/O file to be 7.238 k instead of 110 bytes  the program 
  153. is slower but it works your network harder. Still not 100 % multi 
  154. user only two machines at once. Will fix this with next release.
